About the Artist

My name is Kara Cartisciano but my full maiden name is Waikaramihi Hemara- Haeana otherwise known as Kara given it was such a mouth full to say. I work under my maiden name because I feel it represents me. I was born in New Zealand of Maori heritage and have spent most of my life travelling between Australia and New Zealand. I now reside north of Melbourne in Wandong/Heathcote Junction with my husband and two girls.
 
I have been painting seriously for around 7 years. My work has dramatically evolved over this time and often changes with whatever or whoever inspires me at the time. My style of painting seems to mirror my life’s journey and like most artists – painting is part of me it’s something I just do. I enjoy combining what I see visually and what I feel within.
 
I draw inspiration from many sources, nature, love, life, history, culture and I have learnt over the years not to take myself too seriously. I think of painting as something I love to do and have to do, I don’t know if it keeps me sane or insane – only time will tell…
